Presenter: Stephen Rambharose Registered Psychiatric Nurse Stress in the workplace can be good and bad. Eustress - the good type of stress motivates you and propels you to excellence. Distress, on the other hand, is bad stress. It may stem from a situation that may be real, or even perceived, that has you so worried, that your blood pressure raises, the heart rate increases, concentration lapses, focus decreases and sometimes causes you to be unable to function. In this presentation you will learn about the three stages of stress and how distress can manifest into anxiety attacks or panic attacks, which can be fatal. As our society copes with a recession you will learn about the triggers that can cause persons to become distressed. Here you will be able to identify stress in your life and in your project team, and learn how you the Project Manager can play a big role in helping your team members cope with distress. Stephen will be using actual examples of real situations and has a wealth of knowledge to share on strategies and techniques to cope with stress. Profile: Stephen is a registered mental nurse who is attached to the St Ann's Hospital. He is experienced with identifying the triggers to stress that can change a person's life dramatically. He is also a registered EMT, and a former industrial instrumentation mechanic technician working in the steel industry for about 10 years. Stephen is a husband and a father of one son, and is very involved in volunteer work with the elderly and young persons in the community. He loves hiking and often leads tours to watch sea turtles and visit the various waterfalls in Trinidad. Presenter: Michael P.A. Charles THE CHALLENGES OF MANAGING THE MILLENNIAL GENERATION ‘Y’ The Internet and social media have changed the entire work ethic and provide information on just about any subject in seconds. Cultural changes in the corporate world have eliminated the need for allegiances to the organisation and two years of employment in one job can be considered long for a Gen Y person. Personalities, attitudes and office attire are vastly different. Time is no longer considered “of the essence” and attendance at meetings can be a hit or miss affair unless refreshments and snacks are provided. The corporate brief or attaché case has been replaced by shoulder laptop bags, tote bags and duffle bags. Tablets, cell phones with ear phones and multiple chargers are now the order of the day. Climbing the corporate ladder is no longer an aspiration, but considerable time off and other off the job considerations take priority. So how does the Baby Boomer Project Manager motivate and lead a project team staffed mainly with Generation Y members? How does the Baby Boomer deal with the team issues resulting from the Gen X, who often considers the Gen Y to be a nuisance and consuming too much of the Gen X time? To do so effectively requires innovative leadership skills, a major paradigm shift in management attitudes, and an adaption to their way of thinking. To attempt to impose the Baby Boomer’s way of thinking on Generation Y team members is doomed for failure and will ultimately affect the Project outcome. Michael Charles has over forty years’ experience in the Oil and Gas industry both nationally and internationally having worked as an Engineer onshore and offshore in Trinidad and Tobago and the U.S.A. He has extensive operations and project engineering experience working on offshore platforms, oil refineries and process plants. Also, as a Project Management lecturer and trainer, he has conducted project management training courses in Trinidad and Tobago, the Caribbean including Guyana, South West Africa and East Africa. He is a founding member and past president of the Project Management Institute Southern Caribbean Chapter. He is the father of four delightful Generation Y children who constantly challenge his managerial and leadership skills, and from whom he has learnt much.
